The claim. Hellmann’s new Easy Out squeeze package pledges "no waste" and no "scraping, shaking, or banging" to get those last stubborn
globs of mayo from the bottom of the bottle.
The check. We tested six Easy Out bottles against Hellmann’s in original squeeze bottles. We weighed the containers, then squeezed,
tapped, and shook them until we heard sputtering. Between squeezes, we left each jar upside down. After a few minutes, we
gave a final squeeze. We washed the jars, dried them, and weighed them again.
CR’s take. Hold the mayo! Our tests revealed that about 11 percent (almost 5 tablespoons) didn’t make it out of the new Easy Out jars,
which makes the "no waste" claim hard to swallow. However, the new bottles did squeeze out a teensy bit more mayo than the
older ones, which left 14 percent behind. A 24-ounce Easy Out bottle cost $2.88 (about 12 cents an ounce); the original 18-ounce
squeeze bottle, $2.55 (about 14 cents an ounce). If all this squeezing leaves you uneasy, you can always buy the classic 30-ounce
jar for $2.73 (about 9 cents an ounce) and get all the mayo out with a knife and a little elbow grease.
