Data were obtained from the Nursing Home Compare Web site of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Nursing Home Compare uses a combination of Online Survey, Certification and Reporting (OSCAR) and Long-Term Care Minimum Data Set (MDS) data. We also obtained additional data (specifically F-tags) for each deficiency from CMS. Data included deficiencies from both regular and complaint surveys. The data, as well as names and addresses of homes, were current as of September 2005 and included the three most recent surveys for all Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing homes operating as of that date.
