How to shop for a mattress
Sales are frequent, and discounts often are steep, so you should never pay list price for a conventional innerspring mattress. If you see a good price on a mattress you like, buy it. Some other tips to follow when shopping for a mattress in stores:

  • Don't buy before you try a large number of mattresses so you can find the one that is best for you.

  • If you like a particular mattress, buy that one. Remember, the sales staff's claim of similarity might not be based in fact.

  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing and take your shoes off.

  • Try out as many different mattresses as it takes to find the right one.

  • Lie down on the mattress in the positions in which you normally sleep. Our experts say you should lie on each mattress for as long as it takes to determine whether you like it or dislike it. We found that a 15-minute tryout can predict long-term satisfaction.

  • Ask the sales staff for a pillow—it might seem like an odd request, but the sales staff expects you to try out their products. If you want, bring your own pillow with you.
