I always thought these things were just another thing to buy for the house... best purchase I ever made... saved my family from a gas leak in our furnace. We could not smell the gas much... We called the gas and electric company and immediately vacated the house. Furnace had a gas leak... we never would have known if not warned by our Sept 2006 detector. The detector just went bad this week... buying the same one.

Comment:
I had to replace my old unit because it was at the end of its useful life, which was seven (7) years. It was manufactured in 2006 so it makes sense that in 2014 it was ready to be replaced. I see comments where people object to having to replace the unit. I recommend they read about detectors of this sort (and also smoke/fire alarm detectors) and try to understand why that is necessary before dinging the product.

The good news? My new unit comes with a 10 year life and a 10 year limited warranty. So the company has extended the service life and warranty beyond what others are saying in previous reviews. My old unit was 7 years to replace automatically and 5 year warranty. Kudos to Kidde for extending the service life and warranty period.

I would also like to comment on some people's complaint about the backup battery. Sorry, but just like your fire/smoke detectors, having a battery backup is extra protection for you in case of loss of power. In my case, the battery had a LONG life so not a problem to replace. I guess if you are in an area where you loose power a lot, that might be a problem but it has indicators to let you know when to replace the battery.

Another person mentioned wearing earplugs to change the battery --- sorry, but you want this unit to be loud and if the chirping indicator bothers you, that kind of goes against its purpose which is to produce a sound that is noticeable. In 7 years, I had to endure the sound once so not sure what that complaint was about.

The unit has a very clear readout and can easily be tested, etc. I have never experienced a CO2 problem but presume the unit is working fine.

The range in prices mentioned by Consumer Reports is what I found when researching my purchase of the replacement unit. With the 10 year life - the protection you will receive will end up being very inexpensive over the life of the unit.

My new unit had a sticker on it indicating it was manufactured in Feb 2014. I suppose if there are older units out there for sale, they may not include the extended life and warranty I am talking about and may still have the 7 year life cycle. There are stickers on the unit to tell you the date of manufacture and remind you of the service life.

I highly recommend this detector.

Unit ceases to function after seven year
1/19/2014
Pros
Lasted For Seven Years
Cons
Best Uses
Comment:
Unit ceases to function after seven year by design. The packaging states that after seven years the device will automatically alert that it is time to replace. What it actually does is deliver an error code after seven years and, per their web page, does not detect the presence of carbon monoxide when in this mode. Apparently it cannot be reset and you have no protection until you replace the unit.
