I read my consumer reports magazine and was puzzled by the ratings that they have givem some of the interior paints. I am not a novice painter and have used several different brands, including Behr, Valzpar, Ace, Pttisburgh, and Better Homes.

Painting is all about knowing how to prepare your surface (washing, deglossing, etc.) to accept the paint and using quaility products to put the paint on with. A cheap roller head or brush will give you bad results no matter what paint you use. On the paint..Better Homes paint is thin and drips when rolling. I used Behr paint and it was like trying to put a plastic film on the wall. I allowed the paint to dry, prior to removing the painters tape from the woodwork, and when I pulled the tape of I peeled large pieces of latex paint right off the wall. If you gave me a gallon of Behr I would not waste my time using it. I like Pittsburgh paint and Valspar and Ace did a decent job.

After using the other paints, do to them being lower priced, I keep coming back to S/W. It is more expensive than others, but I am a believer in you get what you pay for. I wait for S/W to have one of their Super Sales to get it. I used Duration Matte and it went on creamy smooth, with very little drips. I was using a brown and it was covering up a yellow in one coat. Even the guy at S/W said he was not sure it would cover a yellow, as that is suppose to be a hard color to cover in one coat, but it did the job. My grand daughter put her spaghetti sauce hands on the paint about 4 weeks after painting and it cleaned up and there is no evidence of where it was wiped. I have used this product in areas that get full sun and have been able to go over and touch up scratches and have never seen a color difference from fading. In short, I think Consumer Reports missed the boat on this paint and not sure why they rank it so low. Most of the time I agree with their ratings, but have bought their recommended products in the past only to find them inferior.

We tried several behr interior based on CR ratings. That stuff just doesn't deserve to be at the top of any list. I had a painter swear by duration based on another customer liking it so much. I said no, go with behr because of CR. That house was flat enamel, you couldn't touch it up, and the paint would stick to wall hanging and even chairs and cords, etc. if they were touching the paint for too long.

Current house I went with Behr flat, AGAIN because of CR. What a waste of time and money. It's not sticky like flat enamel, but it doesn't cover well and it doesn't clean well at all. Its not as good as hiding imperfections as other flats either. You scrub an area, paint rubs off and shines up on wall. You can touch it up though.

So then two neighbors told me they really like duration so I had current painter use it. Its costs more, but it's worth it. We have young children and cleaning it is my main concern. We have scrubbed aggressively and it didn't rub off at all! The best behr paint is nowhere near duration in scrubbing. CR..you should give me all the money I wasted painting rooms with behr!!!! The painter said it's easier to work with than behr too.

CR said fair on staining, my neighbor has it as his backsplash and said he has cleaned grease off repeatedly w/o a problem!

Being this off is making me question other ratings in general.

Comment:
I agree with everyone else that CR really got this one wrong. I've tried all the brands in their rating list. I've always had good luck with CR reviews but I have to wonder how they tested this.

I build (and sell) furniture. There are a few simple reasons I use Duration. I don't need to worry about a customer calling me and complaining the paint from one of my chairs or benches ended up on his pants or of his guests. Or that it faded/cracked/etc.
