Comment:
These shingles are advertised as being guranteed for 40 years. They were installed in 1999 by one of the most trusted roofing companies in our metropolitan area. Twice they have developed leaks that damaged our ceiling. The majority of the shingles have premature cracks in them which can lead to leaks. The company admits to manufacturing problems but their warrenty process is very time-consuming and the ultimate reimbursement, if a consumer's claim is approved, is very little. They prorate the cost of materials but provide nothing for the labor involved.

I purchase a 2 year old home in the summer of 2010 which had Owens Corning 30 year Oakridge Shingles covering the roof. In the fall of 2010 three or four shingles blew off in a thunder storm with about 40 MPH winds. Having past roofing experience I picked up a pack at the local hardware store and repaired the area. Then comes the spring of 2010 and next thunder storm whit gust over 40 mph and shingles come off in 2 more areas totaling about 10 shingles this time. So I decide to contact a Owens Corning certified roofing contractor to come out and look at the damage I am having after each thunderstorm with moderate winds. After his inspection and them repairing the recent damage his conclusion is that the shingles are not sealing on the bottom of the tabs to the next lower shingle as they should. He actually finds loose tabs in several places on my roof. The contractor tells me, He knows a Owens Corning Rep he works with and will get him out to look at the problem I am experiencing. The Owens Corning Rep concurs I have a large amount of defective shingles on my roof that are not sealing together as intended. These Oakridge 30 year shingles are supposed to withstand winds up to 120 mph. I call Owens Corning customer service number to file a warranty claim and I am asked if I transferred the warranty within 30 days after purchasing my 2 year old home? Who in this world ever heard of such a thing? So Owens Corning will not cover their 30 year shingles that are on a 3 year old new roof. I have continued to experience blow off's a couple times a year and keep replacing a few shingles at a time. My contractor gave me a estimate of 19K to replace the mess I am left with. I am considering filing a compliant with the Texas Attorneys Generals office. This is nothing more than Owens Corning not wanting to stand behind their defective product.
I own I home in Carrollton we lived in for 25 years in Carrollton a North Dallas suburb that I now use as a rental property. I needed to replace the roof in March of 2013 and I had the Contractor use GAF roofing materials not Owens Corning. I used there 30 year shingles plus GAF starter strips and GAF felt and valley membrane. GAF extended my roof warranty from 30 years to 50 years at no cost for using 3 or more of their roofing products. its been a year and the roof is flawless and looks beautiful.
So I STRONGLY RECCOMEND NOT USING ANY OWENS CORNING PRODUCTS !!!!!

Comment:
Installed on our house years ago, have survived many storms, high winds, blistering summers, and still look almost brand new.
The only suggestion I would make to any one, and this goes for any shingle is put them on in the spring so the shingles have a chance to weld together in the heat of the summer, and hand hammer your shingles down, nail guns are faster, but often damage the shingle during install.
