About This Brand

While Valspar does not make deck treatments, its acquisition of Cabot has certainly propelled it to the top of the category. While many brands offer combined deck and siding stains, Cabot makes alkyd and latex-based solid, semi-transparent, and transparent stains tailored for each application. Cabot has also introduced stain for composite decking.

Comment:
House was carefully prepared before 100% acrylic stain was used on cedar siding. Within two years, south facing surfaces had extensive adhesion failure. Very expensive proposition for two years of protection.

Comment:
I have used Cabot stain in my cottage located in Ontario, Canada. The temperature in the winter can drop to -30 degrees Celsius and in the summer can reach +30. I have stained the outside siding with Cabot in 2007 and up until today it looks like brand new. I strongly believe that decks should not be stained for one reason: there is not a brand that will last more than a year and you end up re-stain it every year. So for those who stained their desk already, clean it up and leave it to weathered down. And for those who are planning to stain their deck, keep in mind that you are creating an annual maintanace tradition for the next 15 years.
Nitsan

For some reason deck stains dont last long, never understood because i dont need to paint my house as often. I've applied Cabot 2 times over 6yrs now on our deck. Overall its been good, no flaking or durability issues but the color does fail quickly making the need to refinish sooner than desired. Going for the 3rd application this year and will probably use again but I'm looking for the current best performer.
Surface prep is key to making the stains stick. Sanding is manditory and worth the effort in the long run.
