About - Pur CR-6000C

The Pur CR-6000C is part of the water filter test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, water filter models like the CR-6000C are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Lead removal:
Lead removal indicates the percentage of lead that was removed by each filter.

Chloroform removal:
Chloroform removal rates the percentage of chloroform removed. A filter's ability to remove chloroform predicts how well it will remove organic compounds as well as byproducts created by disinfectants used by water systems.

Flow rate:
Flow rate is how fast a gallon of water filtered through the cartridge. The criteria for flow rate scores differ between different types of filters. Faucet-mount, countertop, and undersink models have the same criterion; carafes and reverse osmosis models each have their own.
About This Brand

Helen of Troy's PUR brand dominates the faucet-mounted market. The manufacturer offers a wide range of products with features such as a filter-life indicator. Its major introduction has been the Flavor Option faucet filter, which can add five fruit flavors to the filtered water with the push of a button. It's available at national chains such as Walmart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Lowe's, Home Depot, and Sears and at hardware and plumbing-supply stores, drug stores, and online retailers

Best Uses
We bought the tabletop dispenser to use at home. The design was convenient, and the filtered water tasted good. PUR is a well known brand so we felt it could be trusted, as we have three toddlers, and were mixing their formula with filtered water. Unfortunately, most of the replacement filters did not work. There was limited to no flow, and out of 5 filters, including a 4-pack of replacements, only 2 have worked (so far - the most recent was just opened today). An email to PUR came back with a response to bang the filter on the side of the sink. Well, that works for maybe one pitcher of water, plus can lead to cracks in the filter if you hit in the wrong place. Given the high cost for filter replacements, this is totally unacceptable. I won't spend (throw away) any more money on replacement filters.

Best Uses
I've used PUR pitchers for years. I will quit today! In the last year or more, the filter quality has gone to AWFUL. One box of 3 had been made with the perforations just above the O ring not open, leaving 1/4 inch of water in the top compartment. I opened them with a small knife.
Recently I noticed a strange smell in the filtered water. The top compartment of the pitcher smelled like dry-cleaning fluid. I washed the pitcher and installed a new filter. No change. While the water level is above the filter, the smell is not detectable, but when the water level gets below the filter, the top compartment has a strong smell of solvent fumes. That's very disturbing!
When the KAZ company (name on the box of filters) was contacted, their customer service representative's attitude was anything but helpful, showing no concern for a very alarming fault in their product's quality.
I am through with PUR.

Improve Taste Of Water
This unit serves the purpose of making poor tasting water quite drinkable. HOWEVER, I am about to need my 3rd filter in two months. Drainage slows down to nothing, water sits in top level hours later and contaminates poured water. At around $10 per filter, I think it should work properly for more than two weeks.
