With the demand for residential electricity expected to rise by about 40 percent by 2030, according to the Energy Department's
Energy Information Administration, replacing conventional power with green power can help to lessen future effects on the
environment.
- Conventional energy production is the leading cause of air pollution and the largest source of carbon-dioxide emissions linked
to climate change. (Learn more about climate change at GreenerChoices.org.) When compared with conventional power generated from fossil fuels, green power generated from renewable resources like
water, wind and solar energy is better for the environment.
- The Energy Department estimates that for every kilowatt-hour of green power produced, one less pound of CO2 is emitted.
- Only about 7 percent of the energy in the U.S. comes from renewable energy.
- Buying green power is a way to support a greater level of investment in renewable resources.
