While hailstorms affect much of the U.S., four states--Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas--accounted for 42 percent of the 3,000 severe hailstorms between 1980 and 2002. Eight of State Farm’s 25 highest claim payouts involved hailstorms, and 40 percent of homeowner claims in Texas were hail-related.

To help protect your home from hail damage, choose asphalt or composite shingles that comply with Underwriters Laboratories 2218, the industry standard for impact resistance. Doing so also brings an insurance discount in many states. Materials are UL-rated Class 1, 2, 3, and 4; look for a Class 3 or 4 rating.
