Back to overview
Wildfires may be common on the West Coast, but they also occur elsewhere, especially during droughts. Preventing home damage involves using fire-resistant building materials and clearing vegetation away from the home.

For roofs

• Roofing systems, which include the deck, underlayment, and shingles, are UL rated Class A, B, and C. Class A is highest for severe fire exposure.

• Choose a metal, concrete, ceramic-tile, or fire-rated asphalt-shingle roof. Avoid wood shakes and shingles.

For landscaping

• Plant shrubs and trees at least 30 feet away from the house to keep them from spreading fire to the roof and siding.

• Choose plants with a high moisture content.
