Shopping for major appliances

Last reviewed: November 2009
  • Before you buy any major appliances, carefully check the store's return policy. Lowe's has a seven-day replacement policy for major appliances that have manufacturing defects. At Home Depot, you must report product defects or damage within 48 hours of delivery; after that, you have to deal with the retailer's Special Services department.
  • Read Buying appliances and let 16,000 Consumer Reports readers help you find a good deal.
  • Don't bother buying an extended warranty for major appliances. They rarely break during the period covered.
