Wheels

Models that come with them can be moved by one person, rather than two. But you'll still need two to lift these machines.

Oil guard

This protects the engine from damage by shutting it down if the oil level falls below the minimum.

Fuel gauge

Lets you check the level inside the tank at a glance—important for extended power outages.

Multiple outlets

Four or more outlets (right) let you best use a generator's wattage by spreading the load through more outlets—important if you're using extension cords instead of a transfer switch.

Inverter technology

Improves power quality via a microprocessor-controlled circuit. Currently, however, models that offer it have low wattage and a high price.

Nice but not essential

Electric starting

Provides push-button starts via a battery-powered motor, saving you the hassle of pull-starting (though all started easily). Found on the Honda (1), Yamaha (2), Generac (3), North Star (7), and Briggs & Stratton (12).

Alternative-fuel capability

Lets you run the generator on propane or natural gas as well as gasoline, easing fuel-storage requirements. Found on the North Star (7).
