About - Black & Decker LP 1000

The Black & Decker LP 1000 is part of the chain saw test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, chain saw models like the LP 1000 are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Cutting speed:
How fast a saw cut through a 10-inch-square oak beam.

Safety:
Consists of kickback intensity, the potential for burn due to inadvertent contact with the muffler, and storage safety--how well protected the cutting chain is from accidental contact during storage.

Ease of use:
Based on engine-starting convenience (the average number of pulls to start), primer and choke location and operation, and the ease of adjusting the cutting chain’s tightness, checking and adding fluids, and accessing the air filter and spark plug.

Pros

Quieter
Safe
Well balanced
Cons
No Oil Reservoir
Best Uses
Brush clearing
Downed Trees
Lopping
Comment:
Cuts with no hangups. Jaws snap close so no real need for a chain brake. Best for cutting downed trees into logs. Black and Decker website says to use vegetable based chain oil for wood and in another section says only to use petroleum oil. Used bio chain oil and it had no buildup of sap on the chain. Much quieter than the gasoline chainsaw. Used on felled trees up to about eight inches with no problem. Highly recommended.

Comment:
This model is better than the LP-1000 because it is cordless. However, this is still unused due to the chain's need to be constantly oiled and there is no automatic oil reservoir to make this user friendly. And that's why I haven't used it yet. I hope to update this review once I've actually taken the plunge. (Pardon the pun)
