Comment:
I bought this saw because some thieving piece of trash stole my Echo chainsaw. The same saw my friends of own Stihls used to make fun of. The saw I intend buy again, so that I can pound the Stihl MS180 into shrapnel and deliver it unto my dealer who won't take it back.

That said, here's the story:

Unfortunately, I use this thing almost every day. It takes forever to start, even with Stihl's supposedly-nifty easy start thingy they have on this piece of garbage. When it finally does start, it sputters and coughs for the first thirty seconds or so, and then struggles through even cedar or cypress.

While it runs, it drinks gas like my neighbor drinks beer. I seem to forever be checking to see if it has enough gas in it to make it through a log, because of its incessant coughing and sputtering. Don't rush it through a cedar log, or it'll make a dreadful noise and sputter again.

The tool-less chain adjustment is neat. The first time. Then it gets old, and you sorta wish you just had your old chainsaw back that needed the tool to adjust the chain. If it was put together better, or was easier to adjust, then it might be okay. You can tell that some engineer in a polo and khakis designed it, though, because if your hands are sweaty (which, if you're working they can be, as you may be aware), the little knob at the top right of the body of the head (look at the picture at the top of the page - look for the little black knob you push forward or backward) is difficult to move. If a working person had designed this machine, that knob would have knobs on it, and be easier to adjust.

It's a pretty little machine, but that's about all I can say about it that isn't negative. I hate it. My guys hate it. Even my six year old asked why it sounds like it's coughing all the time. I told him, It's a piece of garbage. That's why.

Oh. Okay, dad.

And that's pretty much the end of that story.

Comment:
I started a new hobby of chain saw carving bears. My existing Stihl saw has a 20 cutting bar and weights a ton. I needed a smaller lightweight chain saw and this one came with a 16 bar. It is ideal for roughing in the bear. But if you try to cut thru a larger diameter, it's lacking a little on the power side. You just learn not to tackle too much with this saw. I was amazed by how easy it starts. But it goes thru the gas pretty fast. But so far I am very happy with this saw.

Comment:
Recoil broke twice in just over a year. Shop fixed it on warranty the first time but wouldn't do it the second time. Tried to trade it in, they offered me $50. So I went over their head and corporate Stihl sent the replacement parts free of charge. Went back to the old style 180 recoil. I like Stihl products but wouldn't recommend this saw.

Bottom Line
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
