Battery type The type of batteries provided with the drill. All are rechargeable. The more common type is denoted NiCd, for its nickel-cadmium components. Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries boast added energy for their weight. Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries are the latest type and deliver even more power in a smaller size. Lithium-ion and NiMH batteries can be disposed of with regular refuse; NiCd must be recycled.

Battery recharge time (min.) How long it takes to completely recharge a battery after it has properly cooled down. Most of the fast chargers have a built-in temperature sensor that delays the charging cycle, when the battery is too hot from recent heavy use, to when the battery has cooled.

Speed ranges Many cordless drills have two separate speed ranges, or gear ratios; some newer models have three. The slower speed range peaks at about 400 revolutions per minute (rpm) and provides increased torque (twisting force) for driving large screws. A higher speed range that reaches about 1,500 rpm or more is well suited for rapid drilling. Lower-priced drills usually have a single speed range that tops out at approximately 600 to 800 rpm, compromising both driving and drilling performance.
The report does not note that this is the only competent power screwdriver with variable speed control. The only other variable speed competitor, the Dremel Driver, is no longer made and is less powerful (I own both).
This is built very solidly and is a real tool- not a toy. It is not as powerful as a full sized drill, but often that much power is not needed, and it is handy to keep a drill bit in the drill and use this screwdriver to run in the fastener.
The variable speed makes it particularly useful for running screws in and out of electrical boxes, where a real low starting speed is needed so the threads don't get crossed.
Try this one compared to all the other power screwdrivers, which are single or two speed, and you be sold, as I was.
The only knock, and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars, was that the batteries aren't lion.

Three-to-six months

Strength
Plenty of power, good battery life

I own a lot of power screwdrivers. This is the best of the lot hands down. This tool has power to burn. On top of that it has excellent battery life. Batteries charge quickly and cannot be damaged from over charging. Changing bits is a breeze. I carry this tool everywhere. It will be interesting to compare this tool to the new lithium ion screwdrivers on the market today. But until DeWalt puts out one or a lithium battery for this tool. I'll stick with what I got.
can be used as a drill; compact; great battery life
Weakness
two position drill would be the only thing;
I love this drill; I already have 2 other Dewalt drills but this one is my baby...it's smaller and lighter than my other drills but it is just as powerful. Of course heavy duty drilling would require the larger one but I've used this one for many things and it still holds up well. I've had great battery life as well. I love it.

I have used this drill on several jobs and its great. I have been using my partners screwdriver for a couple of weeks, and two people cannot use it at the same time. So I had to purchase this drill and stop using my partners. Another great feature is the ability to charge the battery with my DW9109 12V charger in my work truck. Now I'm going to purchase the drill bit accessory kit. Price for drill is competitive for the quality of the tool. I like the fact that the batteries charge in almost all Dewalt chargers, which greatly saves on carrying several chargers. My goal to to have all Dewalt tools and give away my Craftsman. Battery life is Great. Thank You for letting me review this product.
