About This Brand
John Deere makes and markets one of the best-selling lines of lawn tractors at retail. John Deere lawn tractors are fully featured and have deck widths from 42 to 54 inches. Most models have hydrostatic drive and Briggs & Stratton engines. John Deere lawn tractors are sold at dealers, Home Depot, and Lowe's. The company markets a small line of three very similar lawn mowers through dealers and at Lowe's. Those mowers are also available in a California-emissions version. All models feature rear-wheel drive, a 21-inch, and a Briggs & Stratton engine and are priced from $400. John Deere also markets a line of garden tractors and zero-turn riders.
Deck size (in.) The manufacturer's claimed cutting width, or swath, in inches. Rear-engine riding mowers are about 30 inches, and lawn tractors are about 38 to 48 inches or more. Mowers with larger decks take up more storage space, but cut proportionally faster and therefore reduce cutting time.
Deck size (in.)
Engine power (hp) The manufacturer's claimed horsepower for the engine. All other factors being equal, an engine with more power will be able to handle tougher jobs (such as tall grass) without bogging down.
25 years farming, using a lot of tractors and mowers. Must agree with others who rate it well, but mine, after three years, has gone in the shop four times because it won't start. I've found four other people locally with the same problem on the same mower. JD does a great job on large farm equipment, but they fall short on the little stuff. Ignition module has been the problem every time.

JD X310 Review - After two seasons
Ease of Use
Easy to Maintain
Complicated Blade Switch
I've owned my X310 for two seasons and it's been a great machine. I mow an acre of grass, have a cart and a bagger.

Mowing is great, even in deep grass. I've found to get the best performance, you should check the tires a few times per year to ensure they are all at the same level. Otherwise you may not have a 100% perfect cut. If they tires are at spec and you level it once per season you should be fine.

I used mulch blades when I lived on a smaller lot and never had problems. It was a bit complicated to move to the original blades when I moved to a larger lot, but you don't typically change them every week so it wasn't a problem for me.

Bagger works great. You do have to clean the rim if you overfill it, but I've found running my finger cleans it in less than 10 seconds. I've only clogged the bagger twice when I was learning when it fills up, so that hasn't been a problem for me.

I've got a tow behind dump trailer (17p) that is pulled easily even when full of firewood.

I'm planning on using a snow blade and thrower this season and am looking forward to it.

My previous mower was a Honda self propelled and I was a bit nervous moving away from such a quality machine, but the JD X310 has never let me down.

Great Tractor, Not a good mower or mulcher
Hyd For Deck Elev Good
Power Steering Good
Bagger Rim Needs Cleaning
Bogs Down In Heavy Grass
Changing Mulcher Hard
Leaves Strip Of Grass
When bagging or mulching, a visibly longer height of grass is left along the center of the cut. Taking the mulcher off or on requires the tractor to be lifted up. The bagger clogs pretty easy with pine straw as the tube into the bags extend almost across the first bag. Every time you empty the bags you have to clean off the rim before replacing the bags. The power steering and hyd lift a good but it just does not mow very well. The cheaper D series works better for just yard work
