About - Black & Decker MM875
This Black & Decker mower's rating consists of:

Mulching: Reflects a combination of evenness, which is how close the mowers came to even, carpet-like mowing, and how completely the mower distributed the clippings over the lawn's surface.

Bagging: Denotes a combination of evenness, which is how close the mowers came to even, carpet-like mowing, and how many clippings the bag held before it filled or the chute clogged.

Side discharging: A combination of evenness, which is how close the mowers came to even, carpet-like mowing, and how evenly clippings were dispersed from the side-discharge chute.

Handling: Includes ease of operating the drive controls (for self-propelled models), pushing and pulling, making U-turns, and maneuvering in tight spots.

Ease of use: Includes ease of starting the engine, operating the blade-stopping controls, shifting speeds (for self-propelled), and adjusting the cutting height. Bag convenience and ease of changing modes are separate judgments that contribute to the overall score.

After 10 years of use I finally had to do some minor maintenace on the mower. The rubber flap on the rear of the mower gave out and I bought a $10 replacement to fix it.

Comment:
I bought the MM875 brand new. It didn't cut very well, leaving a tuft of uncut grass sticking up every 5 feet or so. I have a very small flat lawn that I cut regularly with nothing uneven to stress the mower. I succeeded in mowing my lawn only 3 times. The 4th time I started to mow the mower just stopped dead after 20 minutes. There was an electrical smell and the blade just froze. There was no obstruction or anything to cause this.

I called Black & Decker and found out they have only ONE authorized dealer in the whole state of Mississippi. Fortunately, it's in Jackson, where I live. However, it turns out to be an ancient little hole-in-the-wall repair shop in a bad part of town. It took them 3 weeks to put in a new magnet ring, and I was able to use the repaired mower only one time before it broke again. It started, slowed down immediately, began smoking, put out a strange smell, and died.

I reached Josh at Black & Decker who wanted me to take it back to the hole-in-the-wall, but I refused. Therefore, he said it would take 10-14 business days to send me a prepaid UPS shipping label to ship it to their closest factory service center in Baton Rouge. Josh said it was up to the Baton Rouge service center to decide whether to repair it or send me a new machine.

I will NEVER buy another Black & Decker anything. After reading a lot of bad reviews about the MM875, I cannot understand why ConsumerReports gave it a high rating. It's an expensive piece of junk.

Comment:
I typically mow my lawn weekly or bi-weekly. The mower would struggle cutting tall grass. I would frequently mow an area twice as the mower did not cut the grass the first time (it was tolerable). It mowed okay for the first three years, after that, it wouldn't start. I took it to a repair shop who supposedly fixed it. I used it that same day I got it back and it worked for a short while and then wouldn't start. It was good while it lasted.

Not bad if you don't mind grass cuttings left behind
04/27/2009
Strength
Electric, less hassle.
Weakness
Weak on taller grass. Can be heavy for moderate hills. The rear bag does not work well since the pathway to the bag always gets blocked by wet grass which is common in the NW.
Good mower for small flat areas in drier climates. Watch out that you don't mow the cord. Also, have a good quality cord. In wetter areas, you will need to clean up underneath the mower every 5 minutes.

Fine Mower
07/07/2008
Strength
Light weight, and saves on GAS
Weakness
Requires 12 amp wire ($58), thick and heavy to work with and VERY worrysome
Mower is quiet, fairly powerful, light weight, and the height adjustment is great. This is my first electric lawn mower and I fear the electric wire! I used it once, in front yard and it did ok job. My last gas mower was a Sears 6.5HP 22 Self-Propelled with a Briggs&Stratton engine and it got harder and harder to get it to start, even after replacing spark plug and once a year, tune up service!. This mower is easy to start, doesn't need oil, spark plug or tune up and is safe for environment. I had to buy a $58 12 gage 100 ft cord. I have to plan ahead and mow differently than before so as not to mow over the cord.

If you have to mow, this ain't a bad choice
03/11/2008
Strength
Quieter than gas mowers, no messing with gas, easy height adjustment
Weakness
a bit heavy, you have to be cautious about your cord
This mower by Black & Decker does a good job of cutting the grass. It has plenty of power and, of course, it is easy to start. The bag is easy to take off and empty. I am happy with this mower...I think you will be too.
