In about two years time i have had 3 of these and they all broke the same way. First they start sputtering. Then they shut down randomly. then to start(and work) you have to run it for 10mins. then it wont start at all. First one i had almost a year, it cut BEAUTIFUL and was th best mower I had UNTIL that started. Same with mower 2 and 3 that both lasted 6 months. Lowes did take care or me though everytime i had problems.

Comment:
I have a non hill/ minor slope yard. Less than one acre. I use mower on highest cutting, only mulch the grass, might bag but it is such a great mulching mower... better than I expected. Pros: self propelled front wheel drive, mulching power, push button start (works every time!), height adjustment front and back (not each individual wheel). Cons: only one... I wish it had a half height adjustment like my last mower. This is numbered 6, 5, 4, etc. My Yard-Man had a notch in between for better grass length options. I'd totally purchase again. Coming from a traditional gas powered push mower to this... heaven! I do want to note that my Yard-Man was purchased in 1996 and was a total beast of a mower! Engine was still running fine, but wheels and parts to repair were too much of a hassle so I purchased the 280ES from Lowe's!

Relieves Some Back Pain
Comment:
I purchased this Troy-Bilt TB-280ES mower in 2014 mainly because of back pain. It was easy to assemble (I did reroute some of the cables to relieve stress points) and the engine started the first time. As with any mower, the key to longevity is maintenance. I only use Mobil-1 synthetic oil and change it every 5 hours of operation, clean the air filter at least twice per season, check the plug for fouling and for correct gap, lube the cables once a year, keep the battery charged (I use a Deltran Battery Tender Junior instead of the factory charger), wash under the deck to remove buildup from clippings and use only premium gas (alcohol-free) to lessen the chance of gasket/seal failure in the carb. I can only give this mower 4 stars because it lacks a drain on the bottom of the engine (This is all too common on many mowers today). To drain the oil from the engine, you must tilt the mower on its left side which can cause oil to enter the exhaust and loose fuel from the fuel tank.
