Features & Specs - Cub Cadet 31AH55T
Engine size Engine Size is the engine displacement measured in cubic centimeters for gasoline powered engines. Most manufacturers not longer give a horsepower rating. Engine displacement is now the only universal way to compare relative engine size. Electric motors are stated in amps.
Electric start Most models offer a plug-in startng device that saves you the hassle of pull-starting the engine, but you need to be near an outlet.
Multiple speeds For two-stage models, most come with multiple forward speeds and two reverse speeds. The ability to vary ground speed according to snow conditions gets the job done faster. Some of the least expensive two-stage models have only one forward speed.
Single hand controls Most two-stage models have individual lever controls on each side of the handlebar, one engaging the wheel traction and the other for engaging the auger/impeller. This feature allows both control levers to be held down with one hand, leaving the other hand free to adjust the chute controls.
Single hand controls
Freewheel steering For two-stage models, this feature, which usually consists of triggers under each handlebar, disengages either or both the left and right drive wheels for easy, sharp turning.
Single lever chute adjustment Only on two-stage models, a single lever or "joystick" on the control panel allows for quick changes to the horizontal discharge direction (the alternative is a hand crank) and to the vertical discharge height (the alternative is leaving the operator position and manual adjustment) all with a single lever.
Single lever chute adjustment
Headlight This eases snow throwing at night or in low-light situations.
Heated handgrips Heated handgrips are a nicety, though they don't replace a good pair of gloves.
Warranty (yrs.) Manufacturer's stated warranty in years of coverage. In most cases it applies only to consumer use and not commercial use.
This blower starts right up and will throw the snow as fast as you care to walk. I have a long asphalt drive on a hill with a few tree root lumps in it. Previous machines had problems with the bumps or dragged me down the incline. Between the weight and the multiple speeds (easily engaged) I can go smoothly up and down the drive at my own pace. Apron clearing is smooth in low gear no matter how compacted the plow remains are.

Clears to the Pavement
This unit is excellent for normal driveway clearing but I'm a little nervous about the auger assembly and this might be a fairly unusual situation, so bear that in mind. The construction is basically fine, but the flange bearings on both the main auger shaft and the secondary impeller shaft are made of plastic and one has already failed when I hit a big obstacle (a heavy door mat). It wound itself into the augers but the shear pins did not completely break off. The resulting strain put too much load on the impeller flange and it lodged itself over the shear pin receptacle. I had to drill it out. To it's credit, it still works great without the plastic flange! Just a slight wobble. So, I'm still going with this unit because it just hands down clears snow better than anything I have ever used in my almost half century of cleaning my driveway) and a couple of neighbors). My neighbor saw me using it and said he thought there was something wrong with his own (an Ariens) because I was clearing so much faster and throwing snow a lot farther. He was impressed. I should also mention this snow thrower cuts through plow banks steadily at low speed without ANY hesitation or choking. It leaves a perfect cut through heavy compacted snow about 3 feet deep. That's amazing and I would definitely recommend this to anyone with a big driveway.
