Hyundai Sonata Overview

The midsized Sonata is one of the best less-costly family sedans. It has a firm yet comfortable ride and handles quite nimbly. The base four-cylinder engine and smooth, responsive six-speed automatic returned an impressive 27 mpg overall. The more powerful 274-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder returned 25 mpg. The Hybrid got 33 mpg overall in our tests but Hyundai says updates should improve on that. Road noise is evident in all versions. Interiors are nicely finished at all trim levels. Rear-seat room and visibility are decent, but rear-seat access is compromised. Reliability has been average for the regular four-cylinder and Hybrid, and below average for the turbo. A redesign debuts this summer.
