Nuts to you

Planters peanut can
In a nutshell
When you're ready to party, that's how the varieties work out, based on average weights in three cans we checked.

The claim

A banner on cans of Planter's Mixed Nuts says, "Less than 50% peanuts." An asterisk leads to the message "Nuts are measured by weight." (Peanuts might tend to be most plentiful because they cost, well, peanuts.)

The check

Our designated legume counters carefully separated the types of nuts in each of three cans, then weighed each group on a food scale.

Bottom line

Mr. Peanut is correct, but barely. In the three cans, peanuts accounted for 45.8 percent, 48.8 percent, and 49.3 percent of overall weight. Other types of nuts varied in weight from can to can, but almonds always came in second and cashews, third. Fond of pecans, hazelnuts, or brazil nuts? Keep a sharp eye out. Cans had only three to six brazil nuts, for example.
