If a car dealer says he'll give you "the original manufacturer's suggested retail price for your trade-in," don't count on it. One such offer from a Toyota dealer had lots of fine-print deductions that would come off the original MSRP. Among them: 25 cents for every mile driven, an undisclosed "reconditioning" charge, and the amount of any rebates or other incentives available when the vehicle was purchased. The dealer could take even more deductions based on your car's condition or history. Our advice? Let MSRP offers RIP.
