Before you spring for a repair on an older machine, consider that an Energy Star–qualified dishwasher can save 49,500 gallons of water and $419 in energy and water bills over the typical model's 10-year life span, according to the Department of Energy.

 

Problem Not enough water during wash cycle or dishes not getting clean.
Repair Replace water-inlet valve or clean inlet screen.

Pro repair $100 and up.

 

Problem Dish racks not rolling properly or falling down.
Repair Replace rollers and axles.
