Mitsubishi Outlander Overview

The Outlander is competitive among small SUVs. A redesigned model arrives this summer with the current version' s powertrain, a four-cylinder engine mated to a CVT that delivers modest acceleration and good 22 mpg overall. The uplevel 230-hp, 3.0-liter V6 with the 6-speed automatic is smooth, punchy, and refined but returns just 19 mpg overall. Handling is agile and secure at its limits, with restrained body lean and quick, well-weighted steering. The ride is fairly stiff, and road noise is pronounced, especially in the GT. Interior fit and finish is so-so. The optional third-row seat is tiny, but cargo capacity is generous and the split rear tailgate works well. The redesign will have a standard third-row seat, and a plug-in hybrid will be offered.

Video: The electric Mitsubishi i-MiEV is not for me
