The Outlander is a competitive small SUV. A redesign arrives this summer with the four-cylinder engine and CVT, which delivered modest acceleration and good 22 mpg overall. The smooth, punchy, and refined 3.0-liter V6 and six-speed automatic returned just 19 mpg overall in the outgoing model. Handling is agile and secure, with restrained body lean and quick, well-weighted steering. The ride is fairly stiff, and road noise is pronounced, especially in the GT. Interior fit and finish is so-so. The third-row seat is tiny, but cargo capacity is generous and the split rear tailgate works well. The redesign will have a standard third-row seat, and a plug-in hybrid (the first with all-wheel drive) with an electric range of 30 miles arrives in early 2014.
