Company

Company is followed by the policy name/number. Not all policies are available in all states, and the same policy may include various options, depending on the state.

Overall score

Overall score is based on calculations performed by Niis/Apex, an independent actuary in Princeton, N.J. Plans scored higher if they had a Weiss financial-strength rating of B+ or above and if they were priced reasonably for the options included in the plan. Scores of all 47 policies ranged from a high of 94 to a low of 57.

Company’s financial-strength rating indicates its Weiss rating, which range from A to F.

Care

Sufficient coverage indicates whether the policy allows beneficiaries to receive care in a variety of settings. A higher score indicates greater flexibility.

Additional options scores were calculated by Niis/Apex. Plans scored better if they offered extras like adult day care or hospice care.

Cost

Annual premium purchased at age 65 and at age 70 show what the policy would cost an individual of that age today. Pricing was based on a day rate of $180 ($150 plus 20 percent for extras), a 30-day elimination period, four years of coverage, and no spousal discount.
