The more business you do with your insurer, the less chance that your homeowners coverage will be dropped because of a single
claim or the riskiness of your location. Moreover, some insurers offer discounts of as much as 15 percent if you purchase
more than one policy from them. So ask your agent for a price quote on other coverage.
You can also add an umbrella policy, which will increase the personal-liability coverage on both your homeowners and auto
policies. Basic homeowners policies generally provide about $100,000 to $250,000 in liability protection, which covers the
cost of personal injuries and physical damage to other people's property in or around your house. For many people, that's
too low to safeguard their assets from litigation. An umbrella policy will raise liability coverage to $500,000 or $1 million
for as little as $150 per year, says the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America.
