The Consumer Reports National Research Center recently polled 2,463 readers about their satisfaction with car rental companies. The result: Seven major companies were close enough in their scores that we think you won't go too far wrong by choosing any of them. In alphabetical order, they are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, and National. Our advice is to compare prices and choose the company offering the best value--or, all else being equal, choose the company that's the shorter schlepp to the airport rental counter.
