The Hyundai Santa Fe is a competitive, well-rounded choice in the midsized SUV category. Although freshened for 2010, this vehicle is starting to show its age. The last full redesign was in 2007; this update brings a new six-speed automatic transmission but the third-row seat has been discontinued. The engines in both the 276-hp, 3.5-liter V6 Limited and the 175-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder GLS return the same 20 mpg overall fuel economy. However, the four-cylinder engine is noisier than the refined, powerful V6.

Inside, the fit and finish has slipped since our last test, as some of the materials seem cheaper. Tall drivers found the seating position high, limiting head room. Leg and knee room are adequate and the vehicle has a tilt-and-telescope steering wheel to aid driver comfort. The front seats are large; the leather seats with adjustable lumbar support are more supportive than the cloth ones in the GLS version.
