Yesterday, cable operator Comcast launched Xfinity 3D, a new full-time 3D television channel that will mix music and sports with movies and original programming.

The launch of Xfinfity 3D, which joins ESPN 3D, n3D, and 3net as 24/7 3D channels, kicked off with an NHL hockey match between the Montreal Canadiens and the Calgary Flames. That game was followed by a Kings of Leon rock concert from Germany.

Xfinity 3D isn't Comcast's first foray into the world of 3D, however. The nation's largest cable operator has broadcast a few sports events in 3D, such as the 2010 Masters Golf Tournament and the FIFA World Cup soccer matches, and more recently has offered 3D movies including Monsters vs. Aliens and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs as video-on-demand selections. It also offers ESPN 3D in some markets.

Much like it did when high-definition TV launched, DirecTV—which created the n3D channel with Panasonic—has taken the lead with 3D programming, offering n3D, ESPN 3D, 3net plus several on-demand 3D movies and shows. If you own a 3D TV set, let us know if 3D programming will influence your choice of a TV service provider, and how happy you are with the 3D programs being offered.
