Hewlett-Packard isn't a slouch when it comes to laptop computers. Ten of the 43 models in Consumer Reports Recommended laptops (available to subscribers) are from HP. But the company is hoping to woo corporate customers with new laptops with consumer-oriented features.
The company says it will release four laptops—HP Envy 14, ProBook 5330m, Elitebook 2760p and EliteBook 2560p. The portable PCs, designed for business use and expected to be released in June, come with features that may appeal to tech-savvy consumers, as well.
The Envy 14, for instance, will feature HP's "CoolSense" technology—an ability to determine if the laptop is on a table and can run full tilt or sitting on a person's lap and therefore use less power in order to generate less heat. The laptop also features a 14.5-inch screen, USB 3.0 ports, a choice of Intel processors all housed in an etched-metal case. HP says it will hit store shelves in mid-June.
The ProBook is clearly aimed at the corporate user, featuring a brushed aluminum case that is less than an inch-thick and four pounds in weight. The $799 laptop, available now, also features a fingerprint reader—a biometric scanner that increases security on the device.
HP's new Elitebook series of laptops are ultra portable convertibles, featuring touch screens that can swivel allowing owners to use them as traditional notebooks or tablet computers. The 2760p with a 12.1-inch screen starts at $1,499 and is available in the U.S. now. The 2560p with a slightly larger 12.5-inch screen will be available on May 23 with a starting cost of $1,099.
