SiriusXM to reorganize its channels, drivers to reprogram presets

Long after Sirius and XM merged, the combined company will reorganize its channels on both the Sirius and XM networks tomorrow, May 4th. The change will group content by genre, and it will make the station numbers consistent between both Sirius and XM.

This means that some users will need to reprogram their station presets for their favorite channels, however the company advises that many radios will automatically connect to the desired station, despite its number changing.

In some cases, stations will be combined and shared between the networks, such as "Willie's Place" merging with "The Roadhouse" to become "Willie's Roadhouse." Some stations will remain exclusive, due to content licensing deals.

One upside of the change is that the ads will be less confusing, as they will promote a single station. And for those drivers who move between Sirius and XM-equipped vehicles or homes, it will be easier to remember the stations. (And yes, this is a minor challenge for us at Consumer Reports as we rotate through many cars a year.)

Some subscribers may need to refresh their radios for the changes to be integrated. SiriusXM notes that certain Toyota, Lexus, and Scion systems may require an additional step. More details can be found at the Sirius/XM FAQ.
