Check late season grill deals, but don't buy by price alone

Consumer Reports News: August 02, 2011 06:11 AM

Costco offers many ways to save money, but if you’re shopping the gas grill aisle, keep walking if you see the Urban Islands 4-Burner by Bull. This midsized Costco exclusive costs $1,500 and was one of the most expensive we recently tested, yet heated unevenly on high and was merely so-so at low temperature cooking. Some grills we tested were excellent, but not the Urban Islands. It was only fair.

Late summer is a good time to find a great deal on a gas grill. And you’ll get a heads-up on sales if you check the hot deals forums on www.fatwallet.com and www.slickdeals.net. When shopping, be sure to do a quick safety check. Nudge the grill at several points to check its sturdiness. Be sure the edges and corners aren’t sharp. And grip the handle to see that there’s enough space between your fingers and the lid. To find the best grill for your budget, see our Ratings of dozens of gas grills, available to subscribers.
