Recall: Chrysler, Dodge minivans—Air bag deployment risk

Consumer Reports News: August 05, 2011 09:48 AM

Chrysler has recalled just under 300,000 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Grand Voyager, and Chrysler Town & Country minivans because air bags could inadvertently deploy.

A leak in the air conditioning and heating system may cause the occupant restraint control module to fail, which could lead to an air bag deployment without warning or illumination of the air bag warning light.

At the end of last year, Chrysler also recalled 2008 model Town & Country and Grand Caravan minivans, because of a problem with the air bags. That recall encompassed 367,000 minivans, and it was due to a a leak in the heater and air conditioner drain grommet. This current recall also affects an additional 50,251 vehicles in Canada, 3,748 in Mexico, and 13,633 export models.

Chrysler will begin sending recall notification to customers in September. For more information, vehicle owners can call Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 888-327-4236, or visit
