Sales prompt additional recall of Roman shades and roll-up blinds—strangulation hazard

Consumer Reports News: October 20, 2011 10:08 AM

Additional retail sales have prompted the recall of about 3,200 Roman shades and roll-up blinds made by Meijer due to a strangulation hazard. This recall comes after some 240,000 Meijer window covers were originally recalled in March 2010, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

This recall involves window coverings that were redistributed to stores and sold to consumers after March 2010 without a repair kit.

With Roman shades, strangulation can occur when a child places his or her neck between the exposed inner cord and the fabric on the backside of the blind, or when a child pulls the cord out and wraps it around his or her neck. With roll-up blinds, strangulation can occur if the lifting loops slide off the side of the blind and a child’s neck becomes entangled on the free-standing loop, or if a child places his or her neck between the lifting loop and the roll-up blind material.

No injuries have been reported in relation to the recall. The “Innovations” and “At Home with Meijer” Roman shades and roll-up blinds were originally sold by Meijer between 2004 and 2009. The window coverings were then also sold at discount retailers nationwide from March 2010 through September 2011 at various prices. To see additional pictures of each recalled window covering see the CPSC's recall notice.

Consumers can contact the Window Covering Safety Council for a free repair kit at 800-506-4636, or return the products to any Meijer store for a full refund. For additional information about this recall, contact Meijer at 800-927-8699.
