Recall: Brookfield Entry Way Tree Sets for fire danger

Consumer Reports News: December 23, 2011 04:08 PM

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall alert for 1,000 holiday decoration sets distributed by General Foam Plastic Corp., of Norfolk, Va. The sets, which where sold at True Value Hardware stores nationwide last month, have battery boxes which can overheat and pose a fire hazard.

According to the CPSC, there have been a dozen reports of overheating battery boxes from the Brookfield Entry Way Tree Sets, but no injuries have been reported. (See 12 tips for safer holiday home decorating for more holiday safety advice and warnings.)

The recalled decoration sets each contain two 48-inch tall artificial green trees in black metal vases, one 24-inch wide artificial wreath and one 9-foot long artificial garland. The wreath has battery-powered lights while the lights decorating the set's trees and garland plug into wall outlets. Printed on the sets' boxes are: "True Value Item #136879," "UPC code 0 29033 36798 0," and "True Value."

Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled holiday decorations and return the Brookfield Entry Way Tree Set to a True Value Hardware store for a full refund.
