Unveiled: 2013 Scion FR-S

Consumer Reports News: December 01, 2011 04:08 PM

After unveiling the Toyota GT 86 sports car at the Tokyo Motor Show, Scion officially unveiled the U.S. version, the 2013 Scion FR-S, at an event in Los Angeles.

The FR-S stands for “Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport” and will be powered by a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 200 hp. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual or automatic. Toyota claims the FR-S will balance performance and handling with impressive fuel economy. To save weight, the FR-S gets an aluminum hood, and a solid roof and trunk instead of a hatchback.

Inside, the sporty coupe will have very low front seats; the rear seats can fold flat.

The new Scion will likely appear in an upcoming auto show, such as Detroit next month, before it goes on sale in the summer of 2012.
