At the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show, Olympus unveiled several new point-and-shoot digital cameras, some with robust features such as long zooms or rugged camera bodies. Most are cheaper than comparable models from previous years.

Here are some details on the more noteworthy:

  • The 14-megapixel TG-320, $180, includes a 3.6x zoom (28-102mm) and is claimed to be waterproof to a depth of 10 feet and shockproof to withstand a 5-foot drop. It will be available in February.
  • The 16-megapixel SP-620UZ, $200, sports a 21x zoom (25-525mm), can shoot 3D photos, and has a Beauty Make-up mode (a fun mode that lets you add various make-up effects like eyeliner or eye shadow). It uses four AA batteries and will be available in January.
  • The 14-megapixel SZ-12, $200, has a 24x zoom (25-600mm) and a fast burst mode that can shoot at 7 frames per second. It will be available in March.

Olympus also introduced several digital audio recorders, ranging in price from $35 to $150. They include the WS-801 ($80), WS-802 ($100), WS-803 ($150), VN-702PC ($60), and DP-201 ($35).

The WS-series models include two internal directional microphones. The VN-702PC has 2GB of internal memory and can accept microSD memory cards. The DP-201 has an easy-to-read 1.7-inch display. All but the DP-201 include USB capability for downloading audio to your computer. All use AAA batteries and will be available in March.
