Volkswagen is recalling a small number of its 2012 Beetle sedans that are equipped with inappropriate summer tires. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the improper tires may become overloaded or under-inflated for the vehicle and increase the risk of collisions.

Although the current recall of 2012 Volkswagen Beetles impacts just 46 cars, safety experts remind drivers of the importance of proper tire selection and maintenance—especially as more vehicles hit the roads for summer road trips. A recent NHTSA study found that cars with tires underinflated by 25 percent or more were three times more likely to be involved in a tire-related crash than those with properly inflated tires.

Consumer Reports' tire-buying guide and Ratings will help you choose the correct tires for your vehicle and travel needs. Our tire maintenance tips include helpful advice such as how to check and adjust your tires' pressure. (See our tire-pressure gauge buying advice and Ratings and the video below for more information.)

According NHTSA, Volkswagen of America will notify 2012 Beetle owners affected by this current recall in September and will replace the tires free of charge.

For more information, consumers may call Volkswagen's toll-free customer support line (800-822-8987) and refer to the company's internal safety campaign number 44K8/W4.
