4 ways to shop smarter
Save big with this month’s easy tips

1
Cut through coupon code clutter. Dozens of sites list discount codes for online stores--but not always the one you’re looking for. A quicker way to zero in on promotions: Type the store name and “coupon code” into a search engine like Google.

2
Get trees, shrubs, and perennials now. Many are on sale in September. Hint: Lift plants out of their containers before buying. If all you see is roots, the plant may not survive the winter.

3
Don’t buy another book. Instead, sign up at Paperbackswap.com. List your books online; if a member wants one, she’ll e-mail you and ask you to send it. Every time you send a book, you earn one credit, which entitles you to one book from someone else.

4
Avoid getting ripped off when buying big-ticket items on eBay. Use an escrow service such as Escrow.com. You pay for an item by credit card, check, or money order. The seller ships it, and the money is released only after you receive and approve the item. The site charges a minimum of $25, but it could save you from a costly mistake.
