What's behind our toilet Ratings?

Experts at our National Testing and Research Center tested 26 models in toilets to see which ones perform best.
We look for:
  • Overall score
Based on solid- and liquid-waste removal, bowl-cleaning at 35 pounds-per-square-inch (psi) water pressure, and noise.
  • Solid waste removal
The ability to move simulated waste through the bowl and trap.
  • Noise
    Flush quietness without the seat.
  • Bowl cleaning
How well flushing cleaned the bowl's front and sides.
  • Type
    G is gravity; P is pressure-assist.
  • Gallons per flush

Toilets are flushing away about 30 percent of all residential water in U.S. homes, so it's not surprising that water conservation remains a major issue.
