Simply having high pressure inside the eyes, without having glaucoma (that is, with no damage to the optic nerve), is also common, affecting about 1 in 10 people over 40. Some experts think treating high pressure can help prevent glaucoma, but there hasn't been enough research to be certain. To read more about this condition, see High pressure inside the eye.
