What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids don't always cause troublesome symptoms. Small hemorrhoids may only cause mild discomfort. But large hemorrhoids can be irritating and itchy.

The most common symptom is bright red blood on the toilet paper or in the toilet bowl. Other symptoms are:

  • Swellings hanging out of your
     
     
     
     
     
    anus
    The anus, which is at the end of the rectum, is where a stool leaves your body when you go to the bathroom. Part of the anus is a muscle that helps you hold in the stool until you are on the toilet.
     
     
     
     
     
    anus (this is called a prolapse)
  • Itching
  • Leaking mucus from your anus (this may irritate your skin)
  • Pain, which you usually only get when the swellings are hanging down outside your anus (prolapsed).

A thrombus is a type of blood clot that forms in the heart or blood vessels and remains there, possibly causing a reduction in the flow of blood. The condition that forms this type of blood clot is called thrombosis.
