How common is genital herpes?
Genital herpes is very common. Anyone who is sexually active can get it.
About 1 in 5 American adults are infected with herpes simplex virus type 2, the most common cause of genital herpes.

Most people infected with the herpes virus (type 1 or type 2) don't know about it. This could be because:
- They don't ever get symptoms such as sores, blisters or cracking skin on their genitals
- They've had symptoms, but they weren't bad enough to go to the doctor
- They went to the doctor, but the doctor didn't think it was herpes.
