Jaundice in newborn babies

Key points about treatments
Jaundice in newborn babies usually goes away without any treatment. But if it's more serious, simple treatments using lights usually help.
- Putting a baby in a crib placed under a series of ultraviolet lights (called phototherapy) is a simple treatment that almost always works.
- Or your baby might be wrapped in a blanket that releases light.
- Occasionally a baby may need an exchange transfusion. This means some of the baby's blood is removed and replaced with blood from a donor. This treatment works very quickly. But rarely it can cause serious side effects.
