High-tech pedometer tracks more than distance
Nike+ iPod Sport Kit and an iPod Nano

Combining Nike+ shoes, a Nike+ iPod Sport Kit, and an iPod Nano creates an electronic pedometer system that provides feedback on your workout. The sensor slips into a special compartment in the sole of the shoes, and the receiver plugs into the Nano, which you wear on an armband.

The Nano reports speed, time, distance, and calories burned on its display and through your earbuds. It can also upload data and record it to your computer.

Our January 2007 Up Front report found that the kit was extremely accurate when runners were able to maintain an even pace. But alternate sprinting and jogging introduced errors. Prices are $29 for the Sport Kit, $150 for a 4GB iPod Nano, and $29 for a Nike Sport Armband. The Nike shoes are extra, but wallets that attach to the laces allow you to use the Sport Kit with other running shoes.

CR's take. If you need motivation, the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit is worth considering. But if you already have a Nano and sneakers, you can buy a shoe wallet that holds the sensor and attaches to a shoe's lace.
