Being middle-aged or older

No matter whether you're a man or a woman, your chances of having a heart attack go up as you get older. The risk for men begins to rise at about age 45. Women's risk goes up at 55. Researchers think younger women are less likely to have heart attacks because they have higher levels of estrogen, the female sex hormone. Levels of this hormone drop when women go through menopause.
