Questions to ask your doctor

If you've had a stroke, you may want to talk with your doctor to find out more. Here are some questions that you might want to ask:

  • How serious was my stroke?
  • When can I get a brain scan?
  • What do you think caused it?
  • Will I be treated in a unit that specializes in stroke care?
  • What kind of stroke have I had?
  • Will my symptoms go away?
  • Will I be disabled? What disabilities will I have?
  • What's the best treatment for me?
  • Will I need any drug treatment?
  • What are the side effects of treatment?
  • Will I have another stroke?
  • What should I do if I get similar symptoms again?
  • What can I do to help myself? Do I need to change my diet? Should I eat less fat? Do I need to stop smoking or exercise more?
  • Should I take any vitamin supplements?
  • Are other members of my family at risk of having a stroke? If they are, what can they do to protect themselves?
