Prostate cancer: Condition overview
Get help for the second most common cancer among men

If you or someone you know is diagnosed with prostate cancer, you're not alone. Consumer Reports Health can help with the best research about prostate cancer, and expert evidence and advice about treatment options.

Key points for men with prostate cancer
  • Prostate cancer is a serious disease, but it usually grows slowly. This means you can live for years without symptoms.
  • If you are older when you get prostate cancer, you may never have any symptoms. You have a strong chance of surviving your cancer and dying of something else.
  • There are several treatments available for prostate cancer, but they can have serious side effects. And doctors do not know enough about whether they work or which treatment is best.
  • If you have early prostate cancer that has not spread, you have a strong chance of surviving, whether or not you have treatment.
  • If your cancer has spread to other organs nearby, your chances of surviving the disease are still good. Some treatments can help you live longer.
The latest figures show that about 220,000 men find out they have prostate cancer each year. Most of these men are over 65 years old, and their disease has not spread beyond the prostate to other parts of their body. Doctors don’t know why some men develop prostate cancer; however, the most well-known risk factors include age, a family history of the disease, and being an African-American man.

Most prostate cancers are detected early and grow slowly, so you have a good chance of surviving your cancer. The treatments you are offered will depend on the size of your prostate cancer and how slow or fast growing it is, whether the cancer has spread to other areas, and your general health. We encourage you to read our entire condition report and to consult with your doctor to learn more about prostate cancer. As a Consumer Reports Health subscriber, you’ll have access to our expert research and recommendations, and you’ll be more confident and knowledgeable about which treatments are best for you.
