Best Mother's Day Gifts for New Moms

Gifts that help new moms in meaningful ways

Save the spa gift certificate and Champagne brunch for the new mom in your life for another year, when she’s not so time-crunched and sleep-deprived. New parents are primarily concerned with getting their little one to sleep and eat and transporting her or him from one place to another.

In honor of Mother’s Day, the experts at Consumer Reports compiled a short list of strollers, high chairs, and cribs that  performed well in our tests. These picks are infinitely practical and designed to make life with a new baby a little less demanding. (We’re not ignoring new dads—they’ve got their own day next month.)

Peg Perego Booklet

Peg Perego Booklet

The Peg Perego Booklet Stroller may not have the cachet of pricier picks, like the 4moms Origami Stroller, $850, but it has a lot going for it. It’s easy to maneuver and seriously sturdy. The back folds flat, making it safe for newborns not yet able to sit up on their own. Another plus: You can add a compatible infant car seat from Peg Perego.

    Chicco Activ3

    Chicco Activ3

If you think a jogging stroller is only appropriate for moms who head out for a run when they have a few minutes, think again. The Chicco Activ3 Stroller does work well as a jogging stroller, but it’s also an easy-to-use all-star as a traditional stroller. Its beefy wheels allow it to easily climb hills and curbs, making it a good choice for the city and the suburbs. And you can pair it with our top-rated infant car seat, the Chicco Keyfit, $180.

      BabyBjorn High Chair

      BabyBjorn High Chair

At first glance, the BabyBjorn High Chair looks like it's made for a doll. A mere 11 pounds, it’s lean and trim with a small footprint that makes it easy to move from one spot to another. Despite its petite profile, our experts found it can accommodate children up to 30 pounds, and look sharp doing so. Cleaning is a snap because there are few crevices to trap food, and the top of the tray is removable so you can wash it in the sink.

        Fisher-Price EZ Clean

        Fisher-Price EZ Clean

The Fisher-Price EZ Clean High Chair isn't as stylish as the BabyBjorn but what it lacks in looks it more than makes up for with its practical design. The wide base is sturdy, and the chair adjusts to four heights and the seat back to three positions. That means the chair will grow with your child. You can remove the fabric seat and throw it in the washer.

          Baby Mod Olivia

          Baby Mod Olivia

Babies often start sleeping in a bassinet, but it's not long before they'll need to move into a crib. The Baby Mod Olivia 3-in-1 Crib has a two-tone finish with a base made from stained pine. It offers a safe spot for baby to slumber and converts to a toddler bed and day bed when junior outgrows the crib. Our testers found it simple to assemble.

            Ikea Sundvik

            Ikea Sundvik

The real gift here may be sparing your loved one a trip to Ikea, the notoriously crowded emporium of inexpensive baby gear. For extra credit, you can offer to assemble the Ikea Sundvik Crib. Our experts found this safe, sturdy crib easy to put together with the included hex key. Save the key so you can remove the stationary side and convert the crib to a toddler bed when your child is ready. For the best fit, Ikea recommends that you buy the mattress made especially for this crib.

As a classically trained chef and an enthusiast DIYer, I've always valued having the best tool for a job—whether the task at hand is dicing onions for mirepoix or hanging drywall. When I'm not writing about home products, I can be found putting them to the test in the 1850s farmhouse my wife and I are restoring while raising our two young children.
